Fitted some shorter used shocks yesterday, 11" just to see how I like the look/ride, before committing to some new ones.
I'm happy with the look and a quick ride round the block suggests the ride is OK, but I've got a very loud chirping noise, guessing it's the belt, mines always run quiet and I thought I had the nack of adjusting it.
Just wondering if anyone can confirm it's the belt and explain the mechanics of it......its a different tone depending on whether accelerating or decelerating, no sign of anything else rubbing, not even close, just can't quite get my head round why its happened, I get that the effective belt length /tension may have changed with the drop, but I thought chirping belts issues were down to alignment rather than tension?

You've changed something and now have a result of the change. Tension has everything to do with chirping (IMO) , alignment or mis alignment effects wear of the belt edge.

This has worked for me for many kms and years. Align both sides as close as possible to the same measurement using the Triumph tool and verniers ( check again after tensioning the axle nut) and set the belt slack ( at the slackest area of the belt) to approx 20mm with the weight off the rear wheel. The factory specs are too tight (IMO) If your pipes are in the way, take them off, it makes measuring the axle much easier.

Experience is something you get just after you needed it

Great advice, much appreciated, thank you.
I have the belt tension tool, but not the other you mention for measuring alignment, didn't know it existed, but a quick Google brings up part no. T3880148.......I'm guessing thats what you mean? I'll get one ordered, step up my belt tensioning game.

Thanks again

Yes that is the correct tool. Mat1600 used to make some really great adjusters that many of us bought, they make the job easier as you can push/pull the axle. You can locate an extra nut on the OEM adjuster after the frame to do this. Otherwise just use a rubber mallet to settle the wheel after adjusting.

The pulleys expand when they heat up which makes the belt even tighter ( try it after a decent ride) , there have been a few cases where the bearing supporting the output shaft to the front pulley has failed, we think due to very tight belts over a long period.

Lee is perfectly correct, to me the tension tool is useless the alignment tool is the only way to get it right unless your swing arm is not square.

Belt chirp (and hub needle bearing) in action: Link
From a previous post on the subject of belt adjustment:

What fascinates me is the last step in belt adjustments, where the specs/settings/procedures end, and intimate knowledge of a particular machine begins. My ride isn't satisfied until I adjust 1/4 turn after 100 miles or so.
Get it perfect by any of the methods to be found on this site - and I mean dead on - adjusters snug, spindle torqued to 110Nm, all dialed in - and a hundred miles later, the belt wants attention.

As pointed out by many here, 1/4 turn on one adjuster can send the belt from one side to the other. Another 1/4 turn in same direction = chirp. Good news is, once chirp is gone, it's gone. And adjustment gets faster/easier every time you do it.

Thanks Lee, alignment tool is on the way and after a bit of trial and error adjustment yesterday my belt is quiet again.
I'd seen Matts adjusters, but he doesn't seem to have been around for 3 years or so, which is a shame. Great that some of you guys are still about and willing to share though

Great link ......although now slightly concerned that mine sounded somewhere between the two, definitely not as high pitched as the belt in that link, louder and had a definite pitch change on deceleration. Having said all that, after some tinker time yesterday, I've got it running just left of central on the pulley, slightly slacker than Triumph specs, and silent again.
I'll get ready for the 100 mile finessing, and I think you're dead right about the "feel" thing, I'm learning this as I go, this big old girl is not like a Jap sportsbike, its going to be a more complex relationship I think.

She needs a little love is all.... don't think she's the jealous type. If something's wrong, she'll sure let you know ;-)

Last I checked, there's no way to post audio or video here. Animated GIFs.... Sorry.

He is still around, pops in now and then. he just became far too busy in his work to do small specialised jobs.

I will drop him a polite PM, see if there's any chance at some point........but if he's busy, then he's busy.

What sort of money did they run at?

He's only about half a tank away from me, I could go collect, buy the man a beer.

Perhaps a single malt or a Timmy Taylors if I remember correctly.

Mate I really can't remember the price, too long ago.

Matt likes a beer, I had a couple with him back in 2015 when I visited the UK.

Anywhere there is no further than half a tank isn't it?
